Question by Lauren:
What are the down sides to Invisalign?
Great question, always good to know the cons as well as the pros! Invisalign is the preferred method of orthodontics for most patients, however there are some things to consider. Invisalign is clear so no one will realise you’re wearing them, unlike braces. They can be removed at any time to eat so no food get caught between wires and brackets and you can still brush and floss as normal. All these benefits can be a bit of a double-edged sword.
Like I said before, one of the biggest benefits? You can remove them to eat and clean! So, what’s the down fall? You can remove them!
Let me explain, ideally, Invisalign should be worn for 22 hours a day for maximum effectiveness. Even though we can compensate in other ways if 22 hours of wear is unrealistic for some patients, the fact that compliance is solely in the hands of the patient sometimes doesn’t work in their favour. In other words, you have to be disciplined. Obviously if things don’t track perfectly we can make adjustments and refine things so the end result is perfect but it can affect the journey.
That’s the main downfall and is an important one, otherwise Invisalign is great! Also, as we are a general dental practice, Invisalign with us works out cheaper than braces with a specialist orthodontist.
